Professor Feng Pao Hsii (1936–2015) served as President of the Society from 1981 to 1993 and holds a unique place in the history of rheumatology in Singapore. A pioneer of the specialty locally, he was an accomplished clinician, researcher, educator and administrator whose contributions laid much of the foundation for modern rheumatology practice in Singapore. His warmth and collegiality also earned him many friends and collaborators within the international rheumatology community, and his name became closely associated with the development of Singapore rheumatology.

In 1985, Professor Feng established Singapore’s first Department of Rheumatology at Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH). Through his tireless efforts in training and mentoring the first generation of rheumatologists in Singapore, he helped build the critical mass of specialists needed for the discipline to grow. Today, rheumatology services are well established across Singapore’s public healthcare institutions and in the private sector—a legacy that owes much to his pioneering work.

The Feng Pao Hsii Lecture was established in his honour and continues his legacy of academic excellence and international collaboration. Over the years, the lecture has been delivered by distinguished rheumatologists from around the world, recognised as leaders in their respective fields. The Society remains committed to this tradition of inviting eminent rheumatologists to share their expertise and advances in their areas of subspecialty interest.
